Pokemon Draft League Beginner's Guide
Learn how a Pokemon Draft League works, how to prepare for a draft, and how BattleIQ helps you turn a roster into weekly plans.
What a Pokemon Draft League is
A Pokemon Draft League is a season-long competition where each coach drafts a unique roster, prepares for a different opponent each round, and brings a legal team from that roster to each match.
Instead of choosing from the entire format every week, your decisions start with the Pokemon you drafted. That makes preparation feel more like roster management, matchup study, and adaptation than ordinary ladder team building.
Understanding league rules
Before ranking Pokemon, read the rules document closely. Format, tera rules, mega rules, point budgets, roster size, move legality, item restrictions, transaction rules, and playoff structure all change what makes a pick valuable.
BattleIQ is most useful after those constraints are clear. You can mirror the roster target, budget, and format assumptions in Draft League tools so your plan matches the league you are actually playing.
Preparing before the draft
Good draft preparation starts with role lists, not just favorite Pokemon. Make notes for speed control, immediate damage, defensive pivots, disruption, priority, redirection, setup answers, and flexible glue picks.
Use BattleIQ to compare likely picks by coverage, speed, and role pressure. A pick that looks weaker in isolation can become valuable if it patches multiple roster problems at once.
Building a balanced roster
A balanced draft roster should give you several ways to win. Aim for a mix of offensive pressure, defensive switching, speed control, and utility so opponents cannot prepare for one obvious mode every week.
In BattleIQ, the Draft Planner helps you see whether your roster is becoming too narrow. Coverage matrices, stats, Team Tools, and Item Pressure can show where a roster is sturdy and where it is asking too much from one Pokemon.
Weekly matchup preparation
Weekly preparation is where draft leagues become strategic. You study the opponent roster, identify their likely threats, decide which of your Pokemon are most important, and build a six-Pokemon plan for that specific matchup.
BattleIQ connects the roster view, weekly matchup workspace, team builder, and damage calculator so you can move from broad scouting to exact damage ranges without rebuilding the same context from scratch.
Battle and post-match expectations
During the battle, your goal is to execute the plan while adjusting to the opponent choice of six, items, tera types, and speed control. After the match, review which assumptions were right and which were too optimistic.
Post-match notes are especially valuable in draft. They improve your next week of preparation and teach you which roster roles are genuinely reliable under pressure.
How BattleIQ supports each stage
Use the Draft League hub for league-scoped work, Draft Planner for evaluating picks, Weekly Matchups for opponent-specific preparation, Team Builder for your final six, and Damage Calculator for exact battle questions.
The best workflow is iterative: draft a possible roster, check what it covers, notice what is missing, adjust the plan, then repeat until the team has multiple paths through a season.
